Cerebral palsy in children is the movement disorder acquired in the early stages of childhood. It is accompanied by problems in hearing, poor vision, poor balancing and speech delay. The movement disorder may include poor muscle tone, stiff muscles, deformed body shape mainly hands and feet and involuntary actions. The muscle tone is the automatic ability of muscles to tighten and relax. Often, the lack of coordination in muscles is observed in children suffering from cerebral palsy.
The onset of cerebral palsy disorder in children is due to neurological disorders and brain injury. The damage to the brain may be caused due to infections, a low supply of oxygen to the developing tissues of the brain, bleeding in the brain which prevents the supply of blood to a particular tissue causing its death or a blow to the head after birth results in neurological disorder.
Signs and symptoms
The damage to several parts of the brain affects the voluntary and involuntary movements of the body. The symptoms of cerebral palsy may not necessarily be progressive with age and some children tend to show improvements. The symptoms of cerebral palsy appear right from the birth and some are observed during the 2-3 years of age.
The signs and symptoms of cerebral palsy include :
Over-developed or under-developed body muscles
Improper body postures
Limited body movement
Stiff and clumsy body movements
Poor muscle tone
Poor body coordination and balance
Delayed body development
Difficulty in swallowing
Cerebral palsy treatment
A team of well-trained therapists and professionals is required to cure and control the symptoms of cerebral palsy. Once the neurological disorders, improper functioning of the nervous system, and body muscles are diagnosed, the proper treatment process is required to be followed. Though the occurrence of cerebral palsy symptoms is not controllable but timely precautions followed at the time of pregnancy certainly helps in avoiding.
The condition of cerebral palsy is not progressive but it has serious impacts on day to day activities of the child.
